From this to That...

Project Iron-Rod-Ster

A 70 Iron Head, punched to 1000cc.

2-26-09 & 2-29-09

Did more thrashing... and since I'm not going to Daytona...the deadline has moved. Now I need to finish by the end of March for Chris's one year anniversary.

.

2-21-09

Ran the oil lines with copper, cut up and welded the pipes, heat wrapped the pipes... to cover up the welds and the skid marks from my wreck... I will still try to get this running before Daytona

.

1-14-09

Got about 45 min in... welded up the floor board mounts

.

10-25-08

Got a couple of hours in... worked on the motor mounts... front and top

.

10-15-08

Pulled her off the table for a look see... and to clean the table/work space. I realized the Moon floor boards, particularly the right side one will need to be moved. The carb is a major obstruction... So I pulled out all the sporty foot pegs I had and started mocking things up... With the seat where it is, for me to be able to keep a foot on the right side floor board, I will have to move it way back... like to stock location! If I do that, I can use the stock mounts and weld brackets so I can bolt on the Moon peddles... Sorry Robert! all that work for Not...

Slowly coming together

9-27-08

Well, here they are… haven’t wet sanded or buffed yet, not sure if I will…

I wish the Eclipse paint was a little darker… I wanted the black images to be invisible till the paint warmed up….

I wanted the “Moon” theme… but I thought about making a tribute to my Brother-in-law Chris… that’s when I remembered the Eclipse paint he used on his bike.

Yellow base coat, underneath ALSA Screaming Yellow Pearl. The images are black vinyl. The stripes are ALSA Eclipse Black to white on the Screaming Yellow, then toped with "Blood Red" Candy.

9-2-08

My Doodling for a paint scheme: What do you think?

9-1-08

Had to re-do the clutch. The cable holder wouldn't hold the cable under pressure... I set up a support bracket for the kick starter shaft. also started figuring out the fender struts. The Hurst Shifter sticks I ordered off of eBay, got lost. I did get in a new seat, grips and tail light.

.

8-25-08

Ok, I got the clutch set up... even got the cable working... then I have to decide the go Jockey-foot or Hand foot... I will put some picks up of the clutch. I also started contemplating paint. 1st was candy red, like sucker-punch's Angry Chair, or do a Yellow Moon paint scheme?

.

8-18-08

Went out and bought a bead breaker... got the tube in, of course it's never easy doing an easy job, is it? and , so far, still holding air! Next, spacers and mounting the rear wheel... I temporarily have some black pipe on one side... but that will be for later. Then I took a look at the off set... not too far off

.

8-16-08

Changed the site glass and tried to brake the bead on the rear tire to put a tube in... I guess I need the right tool for the right job...

.

8-9-08

Got another hour or so in... Sample sat in the seat... The carb is still in the way, but if I lower the seat, my leg will clear it. Then I pulled the floor board brackets and hit them with paint... Next I set up the site glass. Not sure if I will keep it this way, otherwise I will have to weld in a bung... then I set up, cut, drilled and welded the oil tank brackets on.

.

8-8-08

Welded the tank brackets, cross member for seat spring and fender support, and drilled the front fork for the handle bars

.

8-6-08

Got 5 min in today... played with the tank. I drilled a hole for the front mount, so I can put a sleeve in and weld the sleeve... net will be what to do with the back mount. It sits up a little higher than I wanted. so either modify the mount or hammer the tunnel a little.

.

8-5-08

It got a little crazy around here.... house caught on fire... had to get ready for a benefit in the name of my brother-in-law Chris (www.rememberchrisstucker.com )... But... I did order a Moon oil tank, which I will hang off the front tubes ala Gasser Style... and ordered a 9" rear fender and a Mustang gas tank... still haven't gotten around to putting the inner tube in the rear tire yet... Here are some mock up shots... with and without side skirts on the rear fender, low bars or Ape Hangers, cut the tunnel to get the tank low, or Frisco Style mounting...

.

#1 low bars, low tank & skirt

7-30-08

Did a little work in the last 2 weeks. Pulled everything off the old frame, and trial fit the motor in the frame. Well Robert said if I went with an Evo, I would have to notch the frame... well... it still needed to be notched... even with the punched out 900. I took some roll bar tubing I had, bent out a nice arch... and laid it out on top... then welded it. I then cut out Robert's back bone... did a little more trimming... added a little and here we go!

Next will be to tube the rear tire.

.

6-18-08

Rattle caned the frame... threw some wheels and tires... and we have a roller. But alas... I packed it up in my trailer for now.

.

5-28-08

My Frame Arrived! I was looking back, trying to figure out when this frame project started... probably about a year! But, So Far, It looks like it's been worth the wait!

.

 4-27-08

Well it's been a while boys and girls... a lot has happened in the past few months... My Brother-in-law, Chris Tucker was hit on March 28th, 2008 on his 2002 Duce, and Passed on the 30th. Stupidity was the cause... a 59 year old lady didn't look and drove through a stop sign and "T-Boned" him... and he suffered a non survivable head injury.
Prior to the sad news, I had been thrashing my car together... we had finally applied for a building permit... so I thought I was only going to have garage space for a few months... (see www.65afx.com under my project)... but we all know how that goes... if we are lucky... with Anne Arundel county, maybe by the time my 4 year old son graduates high school... we might be in the new house.

Well, here are the latest pic's of the Iron-Rod-Ster...

.

11/1/07  Ok, I haven't done anything for a while... Robert called me at least a month ago to say he was ready for the frame neck... so today, I cut it off...even though, I still haven't buttoned up the trani

8/28/07 Robert sent me more progress photos....

7/23/07  Pulled the trani... luckily it was just the shifter rod popped out. I will be putting back together with the 74-75 shifter linkage... moving the shifter to the left side... which will leave me with no back brake for a while... but like the brakes work anyways.

7-15-07    Robert From Armadillo (Armadillo) Fabrications just sent me some progress photos of the front end... looking very cool!

6-28-07 Cleaned up and put the SU carb back on... had to reset the timing. The distributor got rotated during the slide... Well, is started... I took her out for a spin... Now I have a new name for her... "The Iron Headache" . I welded on a heal shifter... so it has a Toe Heal shifter, like a touring bike. Well, I guess the old trani couldn't take it, because on that run, the shifter popped out of the claw... so it's stuck in second gear and pointing up perpendicular to the ground. So now... I have to pull the friken primary... clutch ...etc and pull the trani, and hope the arm just popped out. It also could have been from the accident,

6-26-07   Putting her back together  after the wreck... played with a 40mm dual throat carb... then decided to go back to the old SU. That Dell'Orto can throw some flames to! as you can see by the singed screen on one of the stacks. It does look cool... hmmm, might change my mind again...

6-16-07 Now some better news... Robert sent me some photos of the frame he is putting together for me. This will hold my Fenton Ram-Rod rear wheel and Hurst Pie Crust cheater slick... he is also making a custom leaf spring front end.

6-2-07 The first long trip for the Iron-Rod-Ster... Pasadena to Chevy Chase, approximately 45 miles each way... But I only made it 44 3/4 miles :-( . Had a little miss hap, which now I seem to be getting the short end of the stick. Just a few blocks from work, about 9:25 am, Saturday morning, I turn onto Bradley Blvd. and I am behind a lady in a station wagon. She starts slowing down... I couldn't see why, so I was slowing down... Then out of nowhere, she slams her brakes!, I couldn't stop... I hit the brakes as hard as I could, then tried to steer around her... but I guess it was that SU carb that caught her car... Which changed my skid and kicked the back end to the left and down I went on the right. Luckily there were no cars in the oncoming lane... because I went down. a little road-rash on my fore arm, some scrapes on my shin, and a nice hole in my shin... probably from the carb and support bracket... that took about 8 to 10 butterfly stitches. I was just a nice deep slice, but the skin spread open, and it looked like someone took a spoon and scooped out a chunk, and of course, the bruising and color turning... and probably a few fractures in my right foot.... and the swelling of my shin... it's two weeks later, and it's still swelling, and my friken toes still hurt......
Well, all of this happened because a man, who was walking his dog, on a leash, wearing head phones, and was quite unaware of his surroundings let his dog step off the curb in front of the lady in front of me... George Will... yes, the same George Will, Washington Com-Post, Pulitzer Prize winning writer... Now even the adjuster's supervisor at MY insurance company says its my fault! I get fucked, banged, scraped and poked... plus I have to pay for everyone else's fun.  Now I will probably get dropped from my insurance!

2-27-07 Here is the wheel and tire in sub frame... Until I get the spacer worked out for the drum... I won't know if all of this will fit, and have the chain clear the tire. But it looks like I will have more than an inch offset on the front sprocket. Which leads us on to the next issue. Building an external bearing support for the old Iron Head with the clutch disengage on the sprocket side. I have an idea... I found some sealed bearings that should fit on the existing 1" offset sprocket I have, then I can fab something to hold it in place.

As you can see, it will be a tight fit! We might have to widen the sub frame.
But It Looks Cool!

2-21-07 Ok...Finally got the tire mounted.... it's not balanced yet, Iron Works in Gaithersburg tire machine wasn't big enough to balance it. So for now, I might just do a home spin balance on it... and start the mock up process again.

2-14-07  Latest update... got a 67-72 Shovel Juice Drum set up... and I had an extra drum that I had already been playing with... So I drilled out the alignment dowels, then drilled out the later model bolt pattern... temporarily bolted it up, slid in the axel... and I think it will work!

Now I need to seal up the rim, and get the tire mounted and balanced. The tube wont work for now... unless I drill a new hole for the inner tube... which I don't want to do...yet.

12-22-06  Latest update.... Got the rim's) back from the machine shop... Probably better to have some cut and weld it up who has the right equipment... Everything looks good so far!

  • 11-06: Bike running, tagged and legal. There is so much compression, the electric starter is having fits... and there is some alignment issue... the starter clog wont always engage... and once it does, the solenoid sticks...And, the kicker, which finally works, most of the time, is what got it started... along with a lot of Either ;-) . I just ordered a new starter spring, that little flimsy one that throws the clog onto the back of the clutch basket to engage the kicker. It keeps popping out of its groove, and getting in the way...thus causing the kicker to disengage, just at the right moment to let one's foot to hit the ground and hyper extend your knee... as I have heard, typical for Iron Head kickers. I friend suggested backing off on the timing to ease the starting problem... which seemed to help... didn't take care of everything, but it helped... I had been so frustrated with the starter problem, I almost threw it back up on eBay!... But she got a reprieve with the timing solution....

  • Right now, I have given up on the kicker..., too much compression, not enough teeth... went with a V-Twin electric start conversion kit off of eBay... When I get the bitch started, and running, I will start on the next phase.

  • Presently with a weld on hard tail, will be upgrading with wider hardtail section. Shooting for 200 to 230mm tire. Present plans call for splitting a pair of faux torq thrust type wheels, bolting them back to back, weld up the rim, inserting hubs I designed to bolt (and maybe weld) in that will house the bearings, and allow the bolting on of hardware, such as sprockets, bakes...etc.

  • There are also plans for a leaf Springer front end...for the old look, and, to negate the need for a front fender...i.e. Maryland law
